Many local manufacturers are considered world class and are highly competitive in both domestic and international markets. Like most Canadian manufacturers, however, they face several challenges to continued success.  The increase in global competition, the appreciation of the Canadian dollar, and escalating business costs have all been identified as major impediments to the sustainability and growth of the manufacturing sector in Canada.

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) – the largest manufacturing trade association in Canada – has outlined several broad strategies to address these concerns. Among its recommendations, CME has advocated that Canadian manufacturers collaborate in innovative research, design, and product development, share best practices, and pool resources to implement "continuous improvement” programs.

Drawing upon these recommendations, the NMA has developed a number of initiatives through which manufacturers can work together to enhance their competitiveness in the global marketplace. In particular, the NMA helps its members to: learn from the collective knowledge and experiences of their peers, access timely and cost-effective skills training, and effectively advocate on behalf of the local manufacturing sector.
