Northumberland
to Host Manufacturing Conference
November 1, 2005
The Northumberland Manufacturers’
Association (NMA), in partnership
with Northumberland County Economic
Development, will host the 1st Annual
High Performance Manufacturing Conference
in Cobourg, Ontario on November
14, 2005.
An innovative partnership among
industry, government, and the educational
sector, the conference will help
local manufacturers develop the
knowledge and skills necessary to
compete more effectively in the
global market. Based on a commitment
to continuous improvement and enhanced
competitiveness, High Performance
Manufacturing (HPM) emphasizes the
need for total quality in all aspects
of operations, the reduction of
waste, and the increased involvement,
training, and empowerment of employees.
“This event will be of great
benefit to all manufacturers in
the region,” said Steve Rosa,
Plant Manager of GE Plastics and
President of the NMA. “Whether
participants have experience in
HPM or are only beginning the process,
they will learn what they must do
to survive in an increasingly competitive
market.”
Several high-profile speakers from
both industry and government will
address the audience, including:
Dr. David Mann, Manager at Steelcase
Inc. and a leading expert in HPM
in the United States, Dr. Jayson
Myers, Vice-President and Chief
Economist of Canadian Manufacturers
& Exporters, and Jeff Leal,
MPP, Parliamentary Assistant to
the Minister of Economic Development
and Trade – Small Business.
In addition to presentations, a
number of workshops will be held
concurrently throughout the day.
Participants can choose from a variety
of topics, all of which constitute
key aspects of HPM, including: 5S
and visual controls, change management,
total productive maintenance, self-directed
work cells, value stream mapping,
and production planning and materials
management.
According to George Borovilos,
Director of Economic Development
and Tourism for Northumberland County,
the conference will not only benefit
local industry, but will also help
to promote Northumberland as a centre
of manufacturing excellence. “This
initiative demonstrates that Northumberland
manufacturers are committed to innovation
and continuous improvement. They
are setting the standard by which
success will be measured.”
