Mission Possible: Stellar Canadian Performance in the Global Economy

February 27, 2007

The Northumberland Manufacturers’ Association (NMA) is pleased to announce the launch of the 2007 Manufacturers’ Speakers Series.   On March 9, the NMA – in partnership with manufacturing associations in Durham, Quinte, and Kawartha – will host a breakfast seminar featuring keynote speaker Glen Hodgson, Vice-President and Chief Economist of The Conference Board of Canada.

Mr. Hodgson will discuss the highlights of the Canada Project, a three-year initiative to help leading decision-makers chart a policy course to improve Canada’s standard of living and position within the world.  In particular, Mr. Hodgson will focus on the first volume of the Project’s final report: “Mission Possible: Stellar Canadian Performance in the Global Economy.”

“We are honoured to have Glen Hodgson, a world-renowned economist and writer, as our keynote speaker,” said Steve Rosa, NMA president.  “As co-author of the Canada Project report – one of the most meaningful economic studies in recent years – Glen has great insight into both the threats and the opportunities that Canadian manufacturers will face over the next decade.  He knows what it takes not only to survive, but to win, in competitive global markets.”

The seminar is the result of an important partnership among the four manufacturing associations, setting the foundation for future initiatives in areas such as high performance manufacturing, international trade, and research and development.  More than 80 business and political leaders from Belleville to Pickering have already registered for the event.

“We must look beyond our traditional boundaries and work together to promote Eastern Ontario as a centre of manufacturing excellence,” said Mr. Rosa.  “Collaboration and partnerships are vital to our having a strong global presence.”

The seminar will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. at the Best Western Cobourg Inn and Convention Centre.  To register, please contact Paula Johnson at (905) 372-8315 Ext. 242 or Paula.Johnson@theNMA.ca.  Tickets are available to NMA members for $25 and to non-members for $35.

The NMA would like to thank the Northumberland Community Futures Development Corporation (NCFDC) and RBC Royal Bank for their financial assistance.
