Manufacturers'
Association Hires Executive Director
February 3, 2005
COBOURG – The steering committee
of the Northumberland Manufacturers’
Association (NMA) is pleased to
confirm the appointment of Ms. Paula
Johnson as Executive Director of
the organization.
Development of the NMA began in
the spring of 2004 when several
local companies discussed ways they
could collaborate to strengthen
manufacturing throughout the region.
Representatives from GE Advanced
Materials, Cameco, Esco, Weetabix,
Zircatec, Horizon Plastics, Coveright
and Unitrak participated at this
stage and decided to move forward
as an association.
The NMA then established a number
of key objectives, including: promoting
operational excellence among Northumberland
manufacturers; offering timely and
relevant information and support
to members; providing opportunities
for networking, learning and professional
growth; and effectively voicing
the concerns of the industry to
all levels of government.
“The next step for us is
to dedicate resources to the further
development, launch and expansion
of membership,” said Steve
Rosa, NMA Co-Chair. “We approached
the Northumberland Community Futures
Development Corporation for grant
support to manage the next growth
stage and are excited to have received
their support under Industry Canada
’s Eastern Ontario Development
Fund.”
According to Wendy Curtis, AGM
of Northumberland CFDC, “There
is no question that an organization
such as the NMA is another winning
strategy to strengthening manufacturing
throughout the region. They needed
some initial funding to fly and
we are optimistic they will soar.”
The NMA has also received support
from the County of Northumberland,
which is providing office space
and resources to the association.
According to George Borovilos, Director
of Economic Development & Tourism
with Northumberland County , “Manufacturing
is an important sector in Northumberland
County and this alliance will assist
the economic development efforts
of the County. We are pleased to
support the NMA in their continued
growth.”
All manufacturers in the County
are encouraged to join the NMA.
“In our highly competitive
global business environment, we
must all play to win”, concluded
Rosa . “We believe that by
working together, the manufacturers
throughout Northumberland can achieve
this objective.”
